Since the days of CHECKINIT, when i was arranging parties and exhibitions around London town in empty shops in Soho to swanky clubs such as Bungalow8 and Sketch. I have put the parties on hold and have been focusing all my energies on design projects, which i have really been enjoying. Even though due to my mild case of ADHD (Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder)it has been pretty difficult as i have been battling with my urges to start a 678898798 million projects all at the same time.
But with determination i have completed one of my hardest projects i have faced throughout my career (apart from the CLAW MONEY X NIKE project). Which has put me in the mood to catch up with friends and listen to some bangin' tunes!!!
So me and my friends have got together to bring to you some JUICE. We have all been wanting to play tunes together for ages but not had the time to all pull something together, but now we have and hopefully you will wanna come and enjoy our mix of JUICES!!

We have some great people, playing wicked tunes, in a nice lil bar in a prime location, on a perfect day of the week all for FREE.
Now you cannot get Juicier than that!!!

Yeah my face looks a bit spazzy in this pic, but i loved our day out in elephant so much i wanted to share them with you, i think leigh had carefully planned our romantic day. His colour co-ordinated outfit gave it away.

The redevelopment of Elephant and Castle is an ambitious programme of change that will culminate in one of the largest regeneration programmes ever seen in Europe. How amazing is that???? I knew it, Elephant has always had a special place in my heart even in the shot state it is at right now.

The £1.5 billion, 70-acre programme includes the creation of a new pedestrianised town centre, market square, green spaces and thousands of new homes and jobs.

Southwark Council is leading this programme so that by 2020, local people can benefit from a dramatically improved physical environment with tree lined streets, high quality open spaces and a largely traffic free environment. They will also enjoy access to more local jobs and training opportunities, and new cultural and leisure facilities such as a cinema and swimming pool.

Elephant and Castle will, like in its 1930s heyday, become a thriving urban centre where people come from across London to shop, eat, relax and be entertained.

COVENT GARDEN MARKET, THE OLD BIT

It has been a long time since i hung around Covent Garden, must of been around 10 years ago when i started working at Size, the days when Neal St was THE place to be.

Since then Covent Garden has never really been on my hit list.
But last week i had to go down there to meet Helen my fave copywriter to pick up THE final amends of THE BOOK!!

I was a bit early, and was walking up from the Strand past the old original Convent Garden Market place and turned to my left and i spotted all these shiny bits and pieces, all of a sudden i had a hot flush, the kind i get when i go to carboot sales in Wales!!
I had 15 mins to kill so popped in and was amazed with the stuff they were selling and even more amazed with the prices. I always knew they sold antiques in there but assumed that it was rip off tourist prices.

I definitely recommend a visit if you are looking for some random interesting pieces. I went on a Monday, not sure if its on everyday so you better check.

I was excited to see what Lily Allens new jewellery range was going to look like, as i remember when i first found her on MYSPACE about 4/5 years ago, wearing her thick long gold necklaces with all sorts of charms including AK47's, sovereigns and all sorts of interesting pikey bits and bobs.
But what she has actually produced is something that you could buy in any high street store, including Superdrug. Especially the MINX and type charms, they are just bad!!
Not bad as in good either, and whats the Nouveau Italian widow look. Come Lily you must have enough £££££ to keep it real again, get back to ya roots love.
Of course i do like the smilies, afterall they are yellow!!

Why does everyone think that to enjoy a Sunday you have to be swanning around Columbia Road market drinking Organic coffee, or drinking your hard earn wages away down the local boozer moaning that you cant be arsed to go to work in the next 12 hours. Why not make the most of your most expensive luxurious necessity that is HOME!!! Yes!! We work our arses off to be able to pay rent or mortgage but never actually spend time there, apart from either sleeping, showering or watching Eastenders. As part of my new spiritual self (no i am not being serious, well maybe a little) I am teaching myself to spend more time at home, reading, listening to music etc. I have spent the past 2 years going to private view, after private view. Yeah i love catching up with people i haven't seen in a while, but all in moderation. Besides with working so much i don't get the time. So with the time i do get i am planning on being constructive.
Last Sunday Hanna ventured all the way across the river South!!!! Fuck she nearly forgot her passport!! We chilled, ate and listened to tunes it was lovely. So if you are in need of a

I bought a Ercol dinning set a few years ago, and unfortunately and due to moving house a zillion times in one year the 2 chairs broke. I was gutted as Ercol chairs are now hard to come by and when you do find them they are super expensive especially as Magaret Howell has re-released a number of their key pieces.

Ercol, in case you didn’t know already, is one of the great British furniture manufacturers of the 20th century. Vintage Ercol Love Seats fetch very good prices in the Margaret Howell fashion flagship store on London’s Wigmore Street, but otherwise this is a furniture maker that has been largely forgotten by the design cognoscienti.

Last Saturday i was lucky enough to come across three of the exact chairs i was looking for!!

I was a very lucky lady and was sent a HOT yellow rubber Nixon watch from the lovely lady Mizzzz Nixon herself Mizzz Yeoh, all the way from Francais.

I am trying to figure out what outfits work best with this badboy and i am slowly coming to the conclusion that its an all black one. Afterall i am not Japanese with slick black hair so cannot really pull off some wacky outfit, as i will just look like a nu-rave, townie gone wrong!!! (like i have in the past, haha)

The watch is ace and the best bit is that its Yellow!!
Which has been my fave colour ever since i popped out of my mums ya know what. I have been obsessed with everything yellow forever, i blame my mum for this as she had a craving for everything and anything sunshine yellow (including lemon frish toilet cleaner) when she was up the duff with me, must be why i am such a sunshine kinda gal!!

as you (whoever wants to read this, that is) may of notice i have not been as active as usual on the olde blog. The main reason being that i have been working my ars off designing a book about Chinese Youth Culture which i have already mentioned. Thankfully it is now out of my hands and in the hands of my old colleague Steve who is one of the best artworkers ever. I am really happy with the design and cannot wait to see the printed piece. So if you are wondering where i have been there you go. God i love designing, yep i am such a NERD! And i love it!!!!!

Ever since i was a little kid i have liked things (as much as i hate to say it) Urban, I was Bobby Browns biggest fan, and proposed to choreograph BREAKDANCE THE MOVIE for my school Christmas play by the age of 6. Don't know where i got this love for all things "STREET"??? Afterall i did grow up in the Welsh Valleys????

As i got older i continued to love hiphop, RnB, Drum&Bass and then Garrrrrrage. But the one thing that always held me back from fully admitting my love for Garage music was the visuals, the graphics were always sooo naff!! Dodgy illustrations of chicks half naked on gradient magenta backgrounds with diamonds swirlling around their g-stringed batties!!! Actually i have to give it to MJ Cole his artwork has always been a step above the standard nonsense. With crisp photography and a concept, hence my extra love for his music!

So when i started listening to Dubstep i was really impressed and inspired with the graphics, even the timetable (before the re-design) on the RINSE FM website had my heart doing backflips!!!

I had always checked out who was the Designer on various Dubstep albums and only until today did i check out their site, the people that are guilty of making LDN's Dubstep scene extra crisp are CHECK IT OUT HERE and boy they certainly know how to produce great work.

Here is a bit about the artist
Consumerism becomes the new belief system in Ji Wenyu’s color and detail saturated images. Revolution, market economy and art history are alienated and stripped of their original meaning. In his emblematic paintings, Ji Wenyu contrasts communist propaganda imagery of workers and peasants in heroic poses with Western brand-name product logos. Here, political propaganda enters new alliances with Western marketing’s promises of happiness, which the artist (not without irony) holds up against the public of a radically changing China. By juxtaposing images and iconographies of the stereotyped oriental and the assumed occidental, Ji Wenyu questions the politics of cultural representation. Ji Wenyu’s universe is full of surprises and references to both political occurrences and cultural productions, focusing on the precise distortion of today’s spectacle society. De-contextualization enables the artist to take a humorous stand, as if to attempt a hyperrealism that surpasses the reality of the daily lives we lead in the midst of detached floating images. Irony is key to Ji Wenyu’s work. Between the use of mimesis, critical distance and narrative, Ji Wenyu’s work achieves a rare balance between surrealism, pop and precision. Revisiting the dichotomies of modernist painting, he manipulates the boundaries between figure and ground, to produce an intense and comic baroque kitsch universe.

It is not very often all my Camberwell crew of 1999 get together. As everyone is so busy being FABulous, Matthew is jetting around having exhibitions around the globe, Isa is always busy do something random this year she is playing keyboard for Florence and the machine, god knows what she will be up to next, Boo spends her life dedicated to her art, locked up in her Dalston studio with her paint brushes, Tara is always getting lost somewhere around the world looking for inspiration for her Topshop accessory designs, and Becky oh Becky is off spending her spare time tripping with Shamens in South America. So you get the picture yep everyone is pretty busy doing their own thang.

Which has meant that Taras Birthday has become our annual gathering, god i am so happy i have soo many organised, homely Cancerian friends ;)

Hopefully not until next year!

east london is busting at the seams with f'in moustaches and fix friggin gears! Yeah we are all creative but sometimes you just wanna breath some real air, not the trendy stuff! Chat about what bargain you got in Iceland and how much you paid for ya dog, that kinda stuff, normal stuff. Not about how many exhibitions you have had, what amaizng new collaboration is going down at DSM or how many private view invites you got last week. Yeah its all great and i must admit i am a mega ponce when i wanna be, but sometimes i just like to take a step back.
Hence why i work Eastsidez and live Sarfsidez!!!

Peckham raises the roof

Move over Hackney! London's next creative hotspot, signalled by this bold rooftop sculpture park, could be south of the river, reports Hermione Hoby

It's a hot Tuesday night, and 1,000 twentysomethings have elected to spend it in a multi-storey municipal car park in Peckham. It's a crowd impressive enough to match the big, bold artworks they're here to see. A sculpture park on the roof of the 10-storey building in Rye Lane forms the highlight of the third Bold Tendencies exhibition from the Hannah Barry Gallery, which has joined forces with four local artists' groups for a formidable show.

Coming so soon after the success of Barry's Peckham Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, if anything can substantiate claims of an influential youthful art "scene" in Peckham, this is it. Among the works is James Balmforth's Failed Obelisk, with its detached apex flailing on a spring, and a ziggurat-like piece from Molly Smyth called Motion Towards Collapse: both names suggest defectiveness but the pieces couldn't look more assured of their own clout and strength. The rooftop also boasts a cafe and bar designed by recent architecture graduates Lettice Drake and Paloma Gormley - daughter of Antony Gormley, whose cast-iron bollards (part of Southwark council's Peckham regeneration programme) grace the nearby Bellenden Road.

While Gormley senior is a famous former resident, the south London suburb is more likely to be associated, at best, with fictitious wheeler-dealers Rodney and Del Boy, and worst, Harriet Harman in a stab-proof vest. Soon, though, it may become synonymous with art. Cheap rent and large empty buildings are a classic recipe for attracting young artists, and Peckham's creative boom has also been helped by a stream of graduates from nearby Camberwell and Goldsmiths art colleges.

Felix Petty, who heads a collective called Off Modern, explains that his and other artist-led groups, including Lucky PDF and Sunday Painter, all started work within weeks of each other last year. "We all focused on putting on young artists who wouldn't get a chance to exhibit normally. Instead of being top-down, big exhibitions, it's a real grass-roots thing, and that's why it's blossomed so much. It's also much easier to do stuff to a higher quality if everyone's helping each other out and pooling their resources." Hannah Barry agrees. "There's a particular spirit among these artists of working together yet working separately."

There's certainly a sense of everyone knowing everyone else, and Peckham pride is out in force at the Bold Tendencies opening. Petty admits that the scene can be a little parochial: "It becomes as much about the area as anything else because it's such a factor in the way everything's run here."

Margot Heller, whose South London Gallery is a neighbour of Camberwell College of Art, cites her gallery's forthcoming expansion as well as a new multi-platform arts space, Area 10, as evidence of Peckham's burgeoning creative activity. "It's this coming together of different people and different activities that gives a sense of energy and possibility," Heller says. "Hannah Barry has shown enormous energy and initiative in setting up her gallery, and that really has contributed to a sense of there being a 'scene'."

Barry herself says: "If you don't have any money, you have to find a way to do what it is you're trying to do. I feel strongly that lack of money should not stand in the way. Of anything."

"Of course," she adds, laughing, "we haven't been able to have the plunge pool I wanted, but you have to make some compromises!"

With a sunset gilding an already spectacular view of the capital, the impression from the 10th floor is that Peckham has the whole of London at its feet. As a metaphor, it doesn't seem that far-fetched.

After my fave musical mastermind OUZOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO told me about the lady Cooly G i havet stopped listening to her bangin' tune LOVE DUB, i absolutely love it!!!!

So i was really interested in seeing what she had to say for herself at the Macbeth, unfortunately rather than performing she was dj'in, she seemed pretty nervous and seemed to be worry about the technicalities rather than enjoying her choice of tunes! Unfortunately i did not get to hear the tune i have been rinsing for the past few weeks.

KEEPING IT COOL
Everybody wants a piece of Cooly G. Since becoming the second female artist to sign with Kode 9’s Hyperdub label earlier this year, this South Londoner has been at the centre of an increasingly significant buzz. Not only has she lit up the underground, majors are dueling for Cooly to work her magic on their safe sounding pop. Equally indicative of her wider appeal, The Guardian recently went so far as to name Cooly’s ‘Love Dub’ their single of the week. Taken from her most recent EP, ‘Love Dub’ is a dangerously addictive, sweet sounding, dub enhanced tune. Also featuring on the EP is Narst, a track that indulges in fierce, impatient strings, lined with a rapid snare and enough thumping kicks to set any dancer in motion.

Cooly G, real name Merrisa Campbell, is quite an extraordinary young woman. When not producing, DJing, singing, playing semi-pro football and guiding young kids through troubled times she still finds the time to look after her two year old son - a full time job in its own right but something that comes naturally to the 26-year-old. “I’ve always looked after young people, since I was 17. I want to help people because they just haven’t got any guidance and I don’t know what their parents are doing because they shouldn’t even be feeling like that or even going through situations like that”

As I delve deeper into conversation about the youth of today, Cooly lets slip that she’s been writing a book for the past 10 years. “I want to educate young girls” she tells me “from the age of 16 to 20 I was in a relationship with an older man who completely controlled me. I was left at home to look after his kids when I was 17. There was no Merissa in those years”. This experience has undoubtedly attributed to the moulding of Cooly as the strong independent female she is today. Luckily for us, she is on top of the world right now and people are starting to take notice of this inspirational bright young thing.

From a very young age Cooly knew her way around a mixing desk and turntables- better than most producers today. “I was seven when I bought my first record and tried to scratch because I was watching those American films and tried to copy them”. She also had the advantage of exploring her dad’s old school analogue mixing desk. “I got involved in pressing the buttons, because my dad had equipment at the house. He said I used to play with the mixing desk and it's mad because I know how to control all of that, no-one was telling me how to do it”. Cooly’s instinctive musical nature and technical understanding has led to her becoming one of the most promising producers of the year. Her tribal, dark Grime-like production is something that doesn’t fit easily into one box, but with the likes of Kode 9 and Markus Nasty backing her all the way Cooly G is unquestionably one to keep an eye out for.

As ever, Cooly plays it cool. She’s not letting slip about any future releases but says she has something special lined up for Hyperdub. So, stay tuned this summer and keep your eyes peeled as Cooly G makes her mark, because whether you’re a fan of Funky, House or Dubstep you will quickly see why everyone wants to work with her..
