Wild Combination: Screening, Lecture & Seminar - An Evening Devoted To The Life & Times Of Arthur Russell

An evening devoted to celebrating the life and times of one of New York’s most revered and influential musicians: Arthur Russell. The evening will start with a screening of the new Arthur Russell documentary ‘Wild Combination’, which will then be followed with a lecture by author, cultural critic and academic: Tim Lawrence. To finish the evenings festivities, Plan B Magazine writers will be playing some of their favourite songs by Russell and those who have been influenced by his music.

Following his critically lauded history of dance music, in its seventies heyday: ‘Love Saves The Day’, Tim Lawrence’s in-depth biography of downtown musician Arthur Russell; ‘Hold On to Your Dreams: Arthur Russell and the Downtown Music Scene, 1973-92’, traces Russell's life from his anonymous childhood in Oskaloosa, Iowa, to his extraordinary spell in New York City, and provides the first detailed analysis of Russell's groundbreaking contribution to one of the most maniacally productive periods in city's music history.

Wild Combination

Wild Combination is director Matt Wolf’s visually absorbing portrait of the seminal avant-garde composer, singer-songwriter, cellist, and disco producer Arthur Russell. Before his untimely death from AIDS in 1992, Arthur prolifically created music that spanned both pop and the transcendent possibilities of abstract art. Now, over fifteen years since his passing, Arthur's work is finally finding its audience. Wolf incorporates rare archival footage and commentary from Arthur's family, friends, and closest collaborators—including Philip Glass and Allen Ginsberg—to tell this poignant and important story.

A FEW THINGS THAT CAUGHT MY ATTENTION TODAY, WHILST HAVING A COUPLE OF MEETINGS AND COFFEES

I HAD A FEW MEETINGS IN TOWN AND AS USUAL AS I WAS DARTING FROM ONE PLACE TO ANOTHER, I MANAGED TO TAKE A FEW PICS OF THINGS THAT CAUGHT MY EYE

I SAW THIS GUYS WORK A WHILE BACK ON A RANDOM DESIGN BLOG, I DID NOT KNOW YOU COULD ACTUALLY BUY HIS STUFF. BUT TO MY SURPRISE I STUMBLED ACROSS IT IN SELFRIDGES, ITS PRETTY RANDOM AND SUPER KITSCH. WELL THAT IS ME TO A T!!!

MR ARTHUR RUSSELL

I HAVE HEARD A FEW TRACKS BY ARTHUR RUSSELL IN THE PAST, BUT I HAVE NEVER REALLY LISTENED TO HIM PROPERLY! BUT FOR SOME STRANGE REASON TODAY I WAS BROWSING THROUGH SOME RECORD SHOPS IN SOHO, AND WITH MY ONLY FIVER I WAS DRAWN TO MR RUSSELL'S "CALLING OUT OF CONTEXT" ALBUM. AS SOON AS I GOT HOME I PUT IT ON AND MY FIRST THOUGHTS WAS THAT IT SOUNDED LIKE THE SOUND TRACK TO A TRIPPY MAGIC MUSHROOM INDUCED MOVIE FOR THE 70'S. AS THE TRACKS WENT ON ALL SORTS OF GENRES OF MUSIC WERE INTRODUCED FROM ELECTRO TO HOUSE TO CREEPY VOCALS. YEAH IT DOES SOUND ALL A BIT WEIRD, BUT IT REALLY IS AMAZING! AND DEFINITELY ONE OF THOSE ALBUMS YOU WONT GET BORED OF! EVERY TIME YOU LISTEN TO IT YOU NOTICE SOMETHING NEW.

Russell was prolific,but was also notorious for leaving songs unfinished and continually revising his music.(UMH A BIT LIKE ME AND MY DESIGNS) Ernie Brooks said that Russell "never arrived at a completed version of anything," while Peter Gordon stated, "his quest wasn't really to do a finished product but more to do with exploring his different ways of working musically." He left behind more than 1,000 tapes when he died,40 of them different mixes of one song.

Charles Arthur Russell Jr. (1952 – April 4, 1992) Twas an American cellist, composer, singer, and disco artist. While he found the most success in dance music, Russell's career bridged New York's downtown, rock, and dance music scenes; his collaborators ranged from Philip Glass to David Byrne to Nicky Siano. Relatively unknown during his lifetime, a series of reissues and compilations have raised his profile in the 2000s.

THIS IS A TUNE HE PRODUCED! MORE FUNKIER!! BUT THAT ITS BECAUSE ITS A REMIX BY THE FOUNDER OF GARAGE! MR LARRY LEVAN.

MY FAVOURITE TRACK ON THIS ALBUM IS "GET AROUND TO IT" I COULD NOT FIND A SAMPLE OF IT TO POST, BUT BUY THIS ALBUM! I PROMISE YOU WONT BE DISAPPOINTED!

UNFORTUNATELY ARTHUR DIED of AIDS ON APRIL 4TH, 1992 AT THE AGE OF 40.

In an April 28 column, Kyle Gann of The Village Voice wrote: "His recent performances had been so infrequent due to illness, his songs were so personal, that it seems as though he simply vanished into his music.

AS I WAS WALKING PAST THE GSHOCK STORE ON CARNABY ST, I NOTICED THAT THE STAFF HAD THE LOGO I DESIGNED FOR GSHOCK'S 25TH ANNIVERSARY PRINTED ON THEIR TSHIRTS AND IT WAS ALSO BEING USED AROUND THE STORE. THIS IS ALWAYS NICE TO SEE, ESPECIALLY AS I DESIGNED THE LOGO QUITE A WHILE AGO.

I AM ALWAYS ONE TO LOVE ANY LIL CORNER SHOP, CAFE, HAIRDRESSERS ETC ESPECAILLY IF IT IS RUN BY THE SAME OLD MAN OR LADY, AND KEPT THE SAME AS IT HAS BEEN FOR DECADES!
WHILST RUNNING FROM MEETING NO.1 I CAME ACROSS THIS LITTLE GEM. JUST OFF GREAT TITCHFIELD ST. I ASKED THE LITTLE OLD LADY BEHIND THE COUNTER IF I COULD TAKE HER PICTURE. ONCE I STARTED TO TALK TO HER, SHE TOLD ME THAT SHE HAD BEEN RUNNING THE SHOP SINCE 1954 AND HAD KEPT ALL HER STOCK IN THE SAME POSITIONS IN THE SHOP AS HER HUSBAND HAD LAID THEM OUT 23 YEARS AGO BEFORE HE PASSED AWAY! (OBVIOUSLY WITH NEW STOCK)
I DONT KNOW IF ITS ME, BUT I LOVE HEARING ABOUT PEOPLES LIVES, ESPECAILLY AS YOU KNOW THAT BEFORE YOU KNOW IT THAT SHOP IS GOING TO BE A STARBUCKS OR TESCOS OR ANOTHER BIG NASTY CORPORATION! AND WE ARE ALL WALKING BRAINWASHED LIKE ROBOTS!

MAYBE BECAUSE I AM GETTING OLD, IF YOU CAN CALL 26 OLD.
BUT I DO WORRY ABOUT SHARMA RIDING HER NEW FIX GEAR BIKE, AS MUCH AS IT LOOKS AMAZING! AND SHE DOES LOOK THE DON ON IT! HOW BLOODY DANGEROUS THOSE BIKES ARE!
I KNOW ITS REALLY NOT COOL, BUT HUN YOU SHOULD AT LEAST WEAR A HELMET, I THINK THEY HAVE NEW CHANEL ONES OUT IN DECEMBER!

"Aren’t fixed gear bikes dangerous?

Fixed gear bikes do present certain unique dangers. Many fixed gear riders go brakeless because they believe that they can stop just fine under all circumstances by controlling the rear wheel with their legs. I disagree with this (as do most sensible people) and always recommend having a front brake. Nobody is going to tell you that you have to use it every time you slow down, but you should have it for emergencies, such as panic stops or if your chain falls off or breaks. Having a front brake costs a little more money and adds a little weight, but the added safety is worth the very minor cost and weight gain. Some also say that the front brake messes with the clean aesthetic of a fixed gear bike. To them I reply, "Get back to the gallery opening you came from, you giant pretentious prick."

Another danger of fixed gear bikes is pedal strike. This is where the inside pedal hits the ground while turning. Many fixed gear bikes have short crank arms, narrow pedals, and a taller bottom bracket mount to get around this problem. If you're doing a conversion of an old bike, and reusing the existing crank arms and pedals, this is something that you need to be aware off and take care when turning."

Why would anyone ride a singlespeed instead of a geared bike?

There are lots of reasons why people choose to ride a singlespeed, so it would be difficult to list them all, but here’s a few:
The feeling of the drivetrain on a singlespeed is more direct than on a geared bike. Many people won’t notice or care about the difference, but some do.
They are mechanically simpler, meaning there is less to break and less to put together and adjust - which is handy if you’re inexperienced and building the bike yourself. They’re also less expensive to build. This makes them a great choice if you have a raggedy old ten speed with a hosed drivetrain that needs replacement.
Coaster brakes are fun and make you feel like a little kid again.
If you live somewhere relatively flat, a singlespeed bike can be a good, inexpensive, and worry-free way to get around and get some exercise.

I guess that makes sense, but why would anyone ride a "fixie"?

First, don’t call it a "fixie" - it sounds stupid and you will be ridiculed for it. Lots of people ride fixed gears because it’s cool right now. This is probably the wrong reason. Some of the right reasons are:
It’s a good way to build strength and endurance, and slowing the rear wheel with your legs uses muscles that you don’t normally utilize on a non-fixed bike.
It’s fun.
You can do tricks, if that’s your thing.

BLOODY HELL, I THOUGHT THIS GUY HAD GONE BACK PACKING, GREW A BEARD AND WAS SELLING THE BIG ISSUE IN ST PAULS, BRISTOL. BUT NO! I WAS WALKING DOWN RIVINGTON ST ON SUNDAY AND TO MY SURPRISE SAW THAT HE IS BACK ON TOUR AND HOPEFULLY WITH SOME TUNES THAT ARE JUST AS GOOD AS HIS 1997 UK TOP 20 HIT “Sunday Shining” AND “Even After All”. OBVIOUSLY LIKE US ALL HE IS STRAPPED FOR A CASH TOO, SEE YOUR NOT ALONE KIDS!

HIS ALBUM Maverick A Strike, an adventurous but accessible album released in September 1997. It went gold less than three weeks later, and led directly to the BRIT Award victory. Maverick A Strike is now multi platinum. AND ONE THAT REMINDS ME VERY MUCH OF STUDYING FOR MY GCSE’S ON MY SINGLE BED, IN THE VALLEYS, WITH WALLS COVERED IN SURF SKATEBOARD STICKERS AND POSTERS OF IAN BROWN, THE BEASTIE BOYS, AND JAMIROQUAI POSTERS, THE DAYS OF BEING A TEENAGER!!! JEEE’Z SOMETIMES I WISH I WAS STILL THERE!
